FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?

Life  coaching is about creating the life you want, and empowering you to make your dreams and goals a reality. Many people have goals or dreams that they haven't pursued because they don't know how, or they don't  think they can.

A personal life coach helps people clarify what they  want, identify what's holding them back from getting what they want, and then helps create a pathway to reach those goals. Does that sound like something that could be helpful in your life? More information on the philosophy at Turning Point Life Coaching can be found on the Philosophy page of this website.

DOES TURNING POINT LIFE COACHING ONLY WORK WITH THE ISSUES DISCUSSED ON THIS WEBSITE?

Of course Turning Point Life Coaching works with the issues described on this website, but we work with other issues as well. IF I'VE TRIED TO PURSUE MY GOALS BEFORE AND DIDN'T ACHIEVE THEM, WILL COACHING BE ABLE TO HELP ME?

So many people are limited by their beliefs about themselves and their  life. When expectations and perspectives are adjusted to maximize the  possibilities, and actionable (or "coachable") goals are put in place, those possibilities can begin to come within reach. Of course, you may need to push yourself somewhat, in order to move beyond what is familiar and comfortable, develop new skills, or even risk disappointment if you find that a road you've chosen isn't getting you where you want to go. If that happens, we find another way for you to get where you want to go, and make any adjustments that might be helpful. Pursuing goals isn't simple, but nothing worthwhile ever is.

Sometimes it's helpful to obtain the support and guidance of others, which is often family and friends. But, there are times when it's helpful to have someone outside your familiar circle who believes in you, and who is invested in helping you achieve your dreams and goals. So whether it's  working with your beliefs about what is possible for you, or more clearly defining the path and working on ways to move toward your desired destination, or any other components of the coaching process, having this type of support and guidance can help you turn your hopes and dreams into reality.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENT BEWEEN PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COACHING, AND HOW CAN I TELL WHICH IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Life coaching is  a goal-oriented and results-oriented process, in which we establish a  collaborative relationship for the purpose of helping you meet your  goals. Coaching is focused on the present and future, and on creating a  more fulfilling life. In life coaching we can work on sorting out and  setting personal or career goals, helping you to create a vision of what  you want. We identify the factors that might be holding you back from  pursuing your goals, and then create a pathway for accomplishing them.  Life coaching is not about fixing emotional problems, and it's not  covered by insurance. Both individual coaching and relationship coaching  can be done either over the phone or in my office. Therefore, it's not  necessary to live in my geographic location in order to coach with me. In fact, you can be located anywhere in the US.

Psychotherapy is  more appropriate for people who are experiencing significant  emotional  difficulties. The focus is on addressing psychological issues and  symptoms, to help improve the quality of your life. To receive psychotherapy from me, it's necessary to live in my area.

[Also, please keep in mind that while psychotherapy may be covered by your health insurance, life coaching is a self-pay service.]
